Description
Audio Commentaries -- First up are a pair of informative audio commentaries, one with director Jon Favreau and a second with actor Will Ferrell. His deadpan facial expressions and droll line deliveries raise the laugh quotient exponentially and set the madcap tone of Elf, which wouldn't be nearly as memorable without his participation. For many, Elf is a holiday tradition, and this terrific upgrade will keep it going strong for years to come.
transfer with HDR is a big step up from the 2008 Blu-ray, which literally pales in comparison to this vibrant, crisp, colorful effort. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse.Buddy’s green costume and Santa’s red fabric particularly pop with such contrast, and are extremely deep in color. So one special December, Buddy sets off on a holiday adventure to New York City in quest of his real dad.
However, it's comprised mainly of repurposed material and doesn't come close to delivering the same experience as a PiP track. Not only is the palette strong and steady, contrast is spot on, and black levels are deep (albeit uneven at times). A wide dynamic scale gives John Debney's music score and all the soundtrack tunes plenty of room to breathe, distortion is absent, and all the dialogue is well prioritized and easy to comprehend. The blazing reds of Santa's sleigh, the Etch-a-Sketch frames, the elves' outfits, and the sweatsuit of the Santa lookalike on the street are breathtaking, as are Buddy's green wool jacket and gold tights, the gleaming yellow taxis, and the fabricated blue sky in the animated sequences. Trivia Track -- Is a text based fact track about the holiday season, its associated myths, and the production.
La voix du doublage canadien de James Caan ressemble moins à sa véritable voix américaine, et celle de Will Ferrel sonne beaucoup moins ingénue et innocente que dans la vraie VF, elle colle moins au personnage de l’Elfe.
This soundtrack is not bad for a comedy, but a little more could have been brought into the mix to enhance the visuals. It seems some remastering has been performed, and the result is a lusher, sleeker picture with less grain that still maintains a film-like feel. Ultimately, ‘Elf’ looks pretty good in its high definition debut, but some extra polish, a more natural picture, and another pass altogether would produce a more refined BD transfer. Papa Elf tells Buddy who his real mother and father are, explains his mother death, and his father's current location. Mary Steenburgen, Edward Asner (who we also lost just a little over a year ago), Peter Dinklage, Amy Sedaris, Michael Lerner, and Andy Richter lend the picture additional zip, but looming high above them all is the incomparable Bob Newhart, who brings his patented brand of dry, sardonic wit to the proceedings. Papa Elf's spectacles seem to jut outward and it feels as if we can reach out and grab the animated snowflakes that fall while Buddy chats with Leon the Snowman.
How buddy finds his father (James Caan) and the meaning of Christmas is a joyous, jaunty, sweet-as-a-candy-cane gift for everyone. Dialog is clean, clear, and always discernable over the sound effects and music, so no prioritization issues here. While revealing his origin, Papa explains to Buddy that his real father, a wealthy publishing executive named Walter Hobbs (James Caan), is alive and well in New York City. For those who have never seen this movie before, I would recommend you rent first to see if it is viewable multiple times. The delightful Christmas comedy about Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) and his quest to find his long-lost dad, gain his love and acceptance, and defrost the beautiful but jaded Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) has never looked better, and thanks to the addition of a DTS-HD MA 5.
